Old WW2 Airstrip/Kiskatinaw PP/Mile 0 - Dawson Creek, BC/Grand Prairie, AB

August 24-27: Sadly, we had to leave our beautiful campsite to get going down the road. Our destination for the night was unknown, but we were seeking a boon docking spot.
It seemed the motorhome was a bit large for campground to maneuver in, but it did fit for the most part.

We are always amazed at how pretty British Columbia is and how much wildlife is present on or by the road. Above is a lone Caribou that crossed in front of our path and some pretty views of the road.

Video of caribou crossing the road on a separate occasion.

We were fortunate to happen upon some Stone Sheep at Stone Mountain!

After the motorhome climbed up Stone Mountain, we got to some bridge construction. Luckily, it didn't stop us for long.

We have read online and seen on Youtube that Tetsa River Lodge has the best cinnamon bun, so naturally, we had to try it out. It was definitely worth the stop!

Liard Hot Springs campground is dry camping only and they don't have a dump station. Just down the road is Fort Nelson and they conveniently provide a dump station and potable water for all those traversing the Alaska Hwy. As you can see from the photo, it is definitely used.

We happened to find an old provincial park that is behind an old WW2 airstrip. After I made us chicken fried rice (with Patti's carrots and peas she gave us) for dinner, we walked around the old park and over through the airstrip. There were lots of vehicles parked on the side and we figured the airstrip was still used for personal use today.

We had a great nights sleep and got on the road early. These pictures show recently fire scarred forest and then we both realized why fireweed got its name... It was so beautiful to see these vast fields of fireweed!

Everything was going great, and then... rock hit to the windshield. We were baffled as to how this happened because there was no one we could remember that passed us that might have caused this. We looked back in the dash cam and found that it randomly appears from somewhere off the road. We can't figure out how this originated... There is the dash cam video on the bottom. I slowed and zoomed it on where the rock appears in the sky. See if you can find the rock in the video...

The rock hit happened on the way into Fort St. John, and we stopped on a side road to check out the damage to the windshield. The side road was conveniently right in front of a McDonalds, and Sean was enamored with this Canadian promo with Shania Twain, so we definitely had to get it, lol.

After lunch, we decided that we were going to stay the night in the campground that we had stayed in 2013, Kiskatinaw Provincial Park. The campsites loop through the forested shore of the river and there are a few river side campsites. We were able to fit into a site that had a trail down to the river, which was very low, and of course we all had a blast splashing around in the silty water to cool off.

Found a little froggy friend.

After dinner and washing the pups, we went for a long walk across the long wooden bridge and along the other side of the river. We found a snake! Sean almost stepped on it, lol.

The next morning, we headed out early because we wanted to make a couple of stops before our next destination. We stopped by for a picture at the "Mile 0" marker for the Alaska Hwy in Dawson Creek. Then, we searched for a truck wash to spray off the motorhome and truck since it wasn't supposed to rain for the foreseeable future.

Before we knew it, we were crossing into Alberta Province and had made it into Grand Prairie. There was lots of farming work that was going on while we were driving to Grand Prairie KOA, where we would be staying for the next couple of nights.

We had to run some errands and always end up at Costco to see what they offer. At this Costco, they sell hockey equipment.

Sean found that there were some biking trails near downtown, so we went on a few of them while in town. We went to a couple of used book stores downtown as well.

The next day, we left our KOA campground early and had our sights set on Jasper! Little did we know, I would be vacuuming glass off of Sean from another major rock hit to the windshield. There was lots of 18wheeler traffic in this area and large stones all over the roads. Good thing we were already scheduled in Elkhart, IN to get a windshield replacement, lol.

We stopped in Grand Cache for a break and to stretch a bit. There is an example of the cache in this photo (building on the right), where people would store various things, but mostly was food storage.

Despite the couple of cracks in the windshield that were growing, we kept on the road and started to see more mountains in the distance! To be continued...
