Watson Lake, YT/Liard Hot Springs, BC

August 20-23: We left our gracious hosts, Brain and Patti, to head out to our next destination... Liard Hot Springs, BC.

We left out on a cloudy morning from Whitehorse and we passed many Lakes and a couple of rivers on the way to Watson Lake, YT, where we planned to stay the night. Sean was strategizing to break our drive into 2 days, so we could hopefully get a chance to snag a first come first serve spot at Liard Hot Springs.

While in Watson Lake, we had to check on our sign in the Signpost Forest. Luckily, it was still there! We took some pictures of the road and intersection its close to for landmarks when we hopefully visit again. We found some other interesting signs while we were there.

We boondocked overnight with Patti's parents, who were laid to rest in the Watson Lake Cemetery. Almost directly across the road was Yukon Territories Welcome Sign, so naturally, we had to check it out. There was also a town park called "Lucky Lake" which has a waterslide into a small lake! Technically the park was closed for the season, but we checked out the closed slide and walked through some of the trails toward the side of the park. Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures of the park...

After a great night's sleep, we got on the road and quickly passed the British Columbia Welcome Sign and Hershey was enjoying the sunshine this morning.

Sean could see some animals in the distance and they turned out to be a herd of buffalo! Some of the buffalo had trackers.

Just down from the buffalo was a family of black bears!

Video of momma Black Bear and cubs.

We arrived at Liard Hot Springs just shy of 11am, when we were hoping to have the best chance of getting an open spot. There were only 2 campsites left and we were able to snag one!

The only thing about being around water is an increase in bugs, so we were happy to use our bug tent for the first time. The last time we were in Liard Hot Springs, there were swarms of mosquitoes. This time there were gnats and a small amount of mosquitoes.

You may have noticed on the entrance picture above there is an electrified perimeter fence to keep bear out of the campground, so we walked up to the front to register and check out this fence. Even the cattle guard is electrified.

This rest area has an overflow lot for the campground behind it and was nearly full when we went walking over to get a wifi signal.

There is no cell service in this area and the only way to get internet for free is the BC Hydro EV Charging Station... It seems a little ridiculous to have this charging station here because it runs off a diesel generator, but we will definitely use its perks of free internet, lol.

When we were walking back after using the free internets, Sean spotted a herd of buffalo down the road. It scared us a bit because they were intermittently running in our direction and I was worried they were reacting to seeing our pups. Luckily, we were through the fence quickly!

Working hard now for my shower later, lol.

Once the hard work was done, we decided it was finally time to go visit the Hot Spring pools. This trailer is the "visitors centre" for the park, which we thought was interesting.

To get to the pools, you must leave the protected campground area and walk down the boardwalk through the wetlands.

The pools are so pretty! The water is super clear and there is minimal algae. The bottom picture shows the spring source and the piles of rocks are from people who manage to get all the way to it, which is quite the feat because the water comes out blistering hot. Sean's watch can tell you the water temperature, but he couldn't stand to get very close, so I wore his watch to see what it was. The water was coming out so hot that I couldn't stand getting very close without mixing the cooler water sitting in the bottom, so it's definitely not accurate, but the highest temp I could tolerate was 111 degrees. It was so hot it made my skin turn super red and was very uncomfortable. So, if you like your spa super hot, this is the place to go!

Pretty photos of the walk back to the campground. We definitely like coming to this Provincial Park and had a much more enjoyable stay this time around because the mosquitoes were significantly less, lol.
