July 13-16th: We were tasked with leaving our beautiful views in Seward and head to our next camping spot in Homer. Scott and Tammy helped us get packed up and we were soon on our way.
As we relinquished our spot for the next camper in line, I couldn't help but turn around to snap one last picture to look upon later.
We fought our way back through the frost heaves, lol.
Sean pulled over at Mount Iliamna Viewpoint for the view and for lunch. We never would have expected what transpired during our lunch... a truck pulling a boat lost its wheel right near us and the wheel took off through the other lane of traffic and barreled into the brush at the end of the pullout! So, it was all sparks and flying wheel and traffic dodging the wheel, lol. Luckily, no one and nothing was harmed in the accident.
The guy found his wheel!
A few Bald Eagles graced us with their presence. There were also 2 juvenile Bald Eagles as well.
Panoramic view.
We tried to stop at Anchor Point Boat Launch, but Sean missed the turn so we left it for another day. We went for a while on back roads that were probably not suited for our rig, lol. We eventually got back to the main road and about 20 minutes later ended up at this spectacular view from the Home Visitor Center. You can see Homer Spit in this picture.
The fog made for a very interesting background. Here a kite surfer was showing off.
On the spit!
We camped at Heritage RV Park.
Mountain and ocean views all around.
Fishing Lagoon! There were lots of people fishing here for salmon.
We stopped for ice cream here. They pick a person's name for free ice cream each day. When we went the lucky name was Martha.
Memorial for all those lost at sea.
At the end of the spit, at the ferry terminal pier, is a magical place of sea creatures you hardly ever see...
...Sea stars!!!
You have to dodge all the bird poop falling down from the nesting kittiwakes.
So pretty...
Very busy in the harbor!
A seaplane flew right over us and landed in the lake near the airport.
We managed to make our way back to Anchor Point to see the boats launching off of the beach with these monster tractors. Unfortunately, no launching while we were there this time. Also, there is a $5 fee to park here now. I don't remember a fee 12 years ago...
Lots of boat trailers lined up.
After realizing that no more boats were coming or going, we drove to Bishop's Beach to do some beach combing. Our objective was to find sea glass, but only found some interesting rocks.
Glass art at the parking lot for Bishop's Beach.
We worked up quite the appetite and headed for some late lunch at Fat Olive's Restaurant.
Sean found us a stunning viewpoint of the mountain range and glaciers across Kachemak Bay.
Grewingk Glacier
Homer Spit...you might be able to make out where the motorhome is.
I found us a hiking trail at Eveline State Recreation Site. It features the best wildflower display I have seen in a state park!
Forget-me-nots! Alaska state flower!
Lots of cow parsnips, no touchy-touch! These can cause awful skin irritation.
Dixon (left) & Portlock (right) glacier.
A beautiful memorial to a couple of wonderful women that loved nature. It was full of information on the vegetation that surrounded us
Nightly games consisted of one or two of the following: Jokers & Marbles, Yahtzee, Threes, and we tried out Name 5 (but we weren't fans).
The cloudy day led to a beautiful sunset. This photo was taken at 10:15pm.
The next morning, we awoke to very clear skies!
Clear skies were perfect for a boat ride! We took the Rainbow Connection to Seldovia, AK.
Sea anemones attached to the harbor docks.
Loaded and ready to go. We sat outside because Sean was afraid to get seasick again, but luckily the seas were calm.
Gull Island, literally a few rocks sticking out of the sea with hundreds of birds on them, lol.
There were a few sea otters around.
When the boat came around the side of the islands there is an arch visible.
Back side of the arch.
Back of Gull Island and lots of Common Murre.
Sean got this great picture of a Tufted Puffin.
Mount Iliamna in the distance.
Calm seas and beautiful skies!
Rock formation that the Captain joked looks like a seal taking a drink of water.
Another bird haven island. More Tufted Puffin and Harlequin duck spotted here.
Seldovia!
Seldovia Marina
Grocery Store. We like to see the price differences for the remote villages. Sometimes they are pretty astounding and make you wonder how the residents afford anything.
Halibut tile in the grocery store.
We ate at the only restaurant open in town that day, Linwood Bar & Grill. They were horribly busy, but the food was worth the wait. Tammy and I shopped in town while the guys waited on our food and kept a table.
We found the Historic Boardwalk that survived the Good Friday Earthquake in 1964.
The tide was out during our visit.
Anglerfish wood carving.
Beautiful gardens were everywhere. Residents here really seem to take pride in their small community.
What a gorgeous place to live.
Sean found the airport.
This beach is where Sean found sea glass!
Time to load up. Tammy is sitting in the back, she and Scott beat us back to the boat on our after lunch walk. Scott was hunting down a sea otter named Oscar that frequents the marina, but he had already left from his nap to do sea otter things.
The next day, we were headed on to Anchorage for diesel and Palmer to spend the night. Ultimately, we were on our way to Valdez, AK, one of our favorite towns from our trip in 2013.
All was going well...
...the ride was smooth...
A bit more investigating and I find that there was a significant earthquake outside of Sand Point, AK (way down in the Aleutian Islands) and there was a possibility of a tsunami. Luckily, we were away from the low elevation areas, but close enough that a tsunami would be a concern.
Once we got to Anchorage, we were way out of the warning areas that were "in danger" of a tsunami. We later learned that there was only a tsunami wave a couple inches high and posed no threat to any communities. We fueled up the motorhome at Costco while in Anchorage.
We hit up the post office for some back home related business.
Then to the grocery store for some essentials. None of us had been to a Carrs before, so we picked this over Fred Meyer.
One more round of Jokers & Marbles, then we turned in for the night.
