Seward/Kenai Fjords NP/Russian River Falls/Exit Glacier

July 9-12th: We are traveling from Anchorage to Seward.

We started out the day by testing out Scott's wallet, lol! They graciously offered to pay for fuel since they are staying with us and we took them up on their offer.

Sean and his Dad while he was driving us to Seward.

Beautiful views of the Turnagain Arm Mud Flats.

Caught up to the train.

Our campsite in Marathon Park in Seward, AK.

Tammy looking out onto Resurrection Bay for wildlife and stalking the boat coming and going.

Found a mom and chick Common Merganser.

We walked along the multi-use pathway following the coastline and found some interesting things. Apparently, Seward is the starting point of the Iditarod Sled-dog Race. We found Mile 0 marked by a sign near the South end of town.

So, we tried out our pups for sledding, but I don't think they made the cut... made for funny pictures!

We saw sea otters and a seal out in the bay at this point. Sea otter pictured above munching on something while on its back.

Founders Monument and park.

I can only imagine the clean-up these residents have to do for the bird poop. There are sooooo many birds!

Beautiful coastline walk...

We finally found the ice cream shop! You know we had to stop in for some good 'ole ice cream!!!

Almost right across the street was the Kenia Fjords NP Visitor Center. Lots of info on this beautiful area.

Then we walked on the docks to look at the boats.

LOL!

Tammy found a fabric shop in Downtown. They had such funny and interesting fabrics!

Lowell Creek waterfall off of Lowell Point Rd.

Sean flew his drone to look at ships and things out in the bay.

Motorhome picture.

Motorhome and bay picture.

Looking for salmon. None here jumping.

Bald eagle sitting on electric line framing.

The next morning was a bit cloudy and Seward was expecting rain.

We made our way over to Russian River Falls (about 2 miles, one way) to see if the salmon are jumping up the falls and to see if there are bear catching them.

The trail was fairly easy to navigate, but no one was enthusiastic about taking a picture with me, lol. I took one anyway!

This goes to the observation decks above the falls.

Salmon taking a rest near the opposite bank.

The seagulls know what's up and were waiting for a meal. No bears at the falls today.

The crazy falls the salmon have to navigate up.

Caught a salmon testing out the waters.

Very pretty area.

We decided to go further down the trail after having a snack, we found fresh bear poop!! They are around, but not here currently.

One more time to see the salmon.

On the way back, this bridge will take you to the lake the salmon are trying to get to. (another mile or so), Russian Lake. We decided not to take it because everyone was pretty tired already.

Snacks didn't hold us for long, so we tracked down some lunch at one of the only places around the area, Princess Wilderness Lodge. Scott and Tammy had fish & chips with chowder, Sean had chili, and I had a Philly cheesesteak with fries. Everyone was so hungry, not a crumb was left behind.

We hurried home to get the pups a walk and watch the bay happenings.

A cruise ship had come in!

Walking to the tour boat that Sean and his Dad scheduled a couple nights ago.

Major Marine Tours, our vessel for the day named Glacier Express.

Our seats in the cabin. Sean and I barely stayed in the cabin.

Bald eagle on the day marker as we were leaving the harbor. Our good luck charm for seeing wildlife for the day.

Humpback whale!

Harbor seals!

Prospect glacier

Passengers falling asleep. Dramamine hitting hard, lol!

Bear Glacier with icebergs in its lake!

This was about the point that Sean started feeling seasick, but was pushing through.

Two porpoise right beside the boat!

The captain stopped to get a better view of a pod of orcas. You can see in this video how rough the sea swells were. I was having trouble videoing orcas in the distance. This was the point that Sean got really seasick and couldn't hold back the inevitable. I was taking care of my sick guy and told him I was sorry, but I had to try to get a video of the orcas as I left his side for a few minutes, lol!

Part of Harding Icefield in Kenia Fjords NP.

Cloudy...

...Not cloudy

Holgate Glacier

Long video with small calving at the end.

Sea otters!

Beautiful area... words cannot describe.

Aialik Glacier

All those black spot are lots of harbor seals!

Ice cave!

The tour boat grabbed a glacier chunk and served drinks with the rinsed ice.

Cheese!

I've never seen someone use a laptop to take pictures... lol! I guess it works.

I wasn't able to catch any calving on this glacier.

Stellar seals.

The seas were a bit calmer, but Sean still succumbed to seasickness again, unfortunately.

Horned puffin!!!

Spire Cove

Bear Glacier on the way back to Seward.

Eagle pair on the day marker on the way back to the harbor.

Had to take care of business once we got back to land. Turns out we were parked in the wrong site number because we were under the impression the Marathon Park was a first come first serve type of parking. Apparently not... we had 2 tickets on the truck. Sean called the number on it and the lady was saying that the misunderstanding happens all the time and voided the tickets. On the way back from the dump station, Sean got us in the correct site and all was well.

Another cruise ship came to port and Sean got his drone out to stalk it, lol.

Then it was game night! We were playing partners and girls won this time.

Moose and baby at Exit Glacier!

We don't understand the ranger standing in the way. Everyone was being very respectful and quiet as to not upset the wildlife.

Made it to Exit Glacier!

This is the view in the opposite direction of the glacier. SO pretty!

Against our better judgement, Tammy and I ate chili dogs with the guys. Everyone suffered after that decision with indigestion later, lol.

Sean found a fish weir at Bear Creek that lets an amount of salmon come through per day and counts them. Those are let through to the lake and the others are left in the creek. I'm not sure the point of doing this. It's sad to see them jump and jump, but get no where.

Video of salmon jumping.

Some of the salmon showed signs of injury with chunks of scales missing.

Next, we were making our way to Fourth of July Beach and passed a shipyard. Some old tour boats were here presumably for repair.

Fourth of July Beach.

Then, we headed to the motorhome for naps and to soak up some sun. We played one more game of Jokers & Marbles and the girls won, again! 2-0 now...
