Homer, Soldotna, and Kenai Alaska

Our next adventure has us driving the motorhome about 4 hours across the Kenai Peninsula to Homer, AK. Some Blog readers may know that the attraction in Homer, among other things, is the Homer Spit, which is basically an island in the Kachemak Bay. You can drive, camp, fish, and shop on this island.  Here is our campsite on the Homer Spit.

View from front window.
Everything was calm and peaceful until a motorhome showed up next to us. There are no official campsites on this beach, and there were plenty of places with ocean views left, but this guy decides to almost take out our awning by parking so close next to us. Some people...

We were getting settled and feeling a little lazy, so we were hanging out in the motorhome. This is about the time we looked out the front window to find many people gathering at the grassy area a few yards in front of the motorhome. We followed their pointed fingers to an eagle that landed just up the beach. Eagles are pretty magnificent creatures, and everyone was keeping a respectful distance...

Until this guy showed up...

As, you can see, the eagle flew away after being badgered by this guy.  Way to go dude...We are very surprised that Homer has a very large population of either tourists or residents that are dummies. Sean hopes this guy will try this stunt with a bear.

The Homer Spit is home to the Homer Harbor. Some readers may know that the F/V Time Bandit from the Discovery Channel Show Deadliest Catch has its home port here. Unfortunately for us, the vessel was out fishing. Another fun fact about Homer is that the record high temperature in Homer is 81 degrees. Wow!

There is also a overlook road above Homer, where you can get a view of the town, the spit, and the three Glaciers right across the bay.  We also sat up here and saw an ERA Alaska Airplane touch down at the Homer airport. Era Alaska is the Airline company featured in the Discovery channel show Flying Wild Alaska.

The next day, we decided to go sightseeing to Kenai. It rained very heavily this day, so not many pictures. However, in the town of Soldotna, we stopped to watch the fishing boats being launched and recovered off the beach with a modified John Deere tractor. The tides are so extreme that it would be almost impossible to make use of a boat ramp.
